CASE STUDY

Australian Catholic University

Overview

When the Australian Catholic University (ACU) Media Department needed to find a new home, they settled on an empty shell in Fitzroy – a heritage-listed building built in 1888 that once housed the Melbourne Vet College. They had a basic concept plan to replicate their former facility, including a TV studio, editing booth, and Mac lab, while adding a two-studio radio production complex and student break-out areas. While they had an equipment list, they needed us to fill in the gaps, initially figuring out what they needed to make it all function, and then putting all of those interconnecting parts in place, along with the core pieces of equipment.

The Challenge

Although they knew what they wanted, they weren’t sure how to bring it all together, so they needed us to complete their vision. At the same time, the budget was reduced during the project and we needed to help the builder upskill to construct a facility to this level of complexity.

Our Solution

We listened carefully to what the ACU Media Department needed and why they needed those things, so we could understand how to make the new facility fully functional for their purposes – specifically, teaching students. After the budget was reduced, we managed to identify several lower-cost alternatives that could deliver similar results, while also helping the builder work through the complexities. Communication and flexibility were key.
